Families Against Cult Teachings
When you first hear the word 'cult', you probably think of the wickedly notorious prominent cults of the past, e.g. Heavens's Gate, Jonestown, or the Manson Family. The mistake of course is in thinking that destructive cults like those are just a thing of the past, and couldn't possibly exist in today's much more "enlightened" rapid information age. However, this belief could not be farther from the truth. Cults have existed arguably since the dawn of mankind's social development, and are still very much present to this day. Currently, it is estimated (by cult scholars) that there are over 3500 different cult groups in the U.S. alone, with more than 4 million members.
Families Against What is a Cult
In order to not risk judging a religious group or organization unfairly, one should be educated on what specifically defines and comprises a cult group (since the ambiguous term "cult" is used in many different ways). As a basic definition, from Wikipedia: "the word cult in current popular usage is a pejorative term for a new religious movement or other group whose beliefs or practices are considered abnormal or bizarre by the larger society." Though a good starting point, it is somewhat too unspecific to be a satisfactory comprehensive definition.
